On Tuesday, March 5th, St.Fergal's participated in the annual Féile Fichille chess tournament. This is a series of chess tournaments that take place in venues throughout the country during March. The overall aim of these tournaments is to promote the benefits of chess in primary schools. Four other schools were present in our venue on the day.
St.Fergal's entered a total of 24 pupils comprising two 'masters' (5th and 6th class) and one 'Buds' (4th class) team. Mr.Reilly and Ms.Gleeson chaperoned the teams on the day.
The format of the competition was 6 rounds across the whole day, each round consisting one timed 15-minute game.
As it was a non-competitive tournament no final scores were issued on the day, however our pupils played with great skill and enthusiasm, and racked up a few wins along the way. They also did a wonderful job demonstrating the principles of fair-play and sportsmanship which we discussed ahead of the tournament.
Overall, our pupils represented the school brilliantly and really enjoyed their day of chess!
