Junior Infants Library Visit

Our last library visit of this school year was marked with an extra special storytelling session with our local librarian Margarette. We were thrilled so many parents were able to accompany us, especially as the weather was just a little bit wet!

SPAR Soccer 5-a-side Tournament

St. Fergal's recently had a boys and girls team reach the finals of the Wicklow regional SPAR soccer 5-a-side tournament held in Arklow. Each team played very well in their respective groups.

The boys team played against two teams from Greystones, a team from Blessington and a team from Arklow. They won 2 and lost two of their 4 matches in a really competitive group and they were unlucky to lose out on a place in the final on goal difference.

The girls team were in a really tough group playing against teams from Arklow, Baltinglass and Kilcoole. Most of their games were really close and they again played with great commitment and energy.

Pamper Me Morning

Today we held a fabulous Pamper Me Morning for all our fantastic parents who have special need children in our school.

There was a great atmosphere here in the Parents Room with Jade doing bail appointment with Shellac or nail polish, Tanya transforming our hair with a dry cut, blow dry or curls and Shannon glamming  us up with gorgeous make up.

The day started of with a very informative demonstration on how to curl hair correctly with a curling wand and was followed by a detailed explanation of how to build up make correctly and blend a Smokey eye look.

We are looking forward to our next Pamper Me Morning coming up soon where we hope to open the morning to any mother (or father) who wants a little pampering.

4th Class visit Dalkey Heritage Centre

4th class headed off on a day trip to Dalkey Heritage Centre. We got to see a small role play of people who actually lived in the castle. We got to meet the King & Queen who lived in the castle and we explored the castle. We met a scary craftsman who offered to cut one of girls hair and also examine another boys teeth.

Then we got to make our own coins using a heavy hammer and a stamp. At the end of the day we got to keep the coins we made and we received a certificate from the King & Queen. We really liked the King & Queen as they managed to convince Ms Smyth that we could have a night off homework and she agreed!! Result...!!!

Playing in the Wilderness

There was some fantastic construction play in the yard today. Two separate groups of children created their own camping grounds with ‘fires’.

The children from different classes were thrilled with their fire pit. They worked really well as a team gathering their materials and constructing the pit.

The rain didn’t even deter them from their project.

Another group of children worked together to make a traditional camp fire.

The two groups loved sharing their creations and ideas with each other at the end.

Another wonderful example at how creativity can be encouraged in our large yard and grass space

After School Club: Debating

Debate Club takes place every Tuesday after school. It is run by Ms. Connolly and Ms. Clarke and is only open to students in 6th Class.

Students in Debate Club learn how to write debates and speeches, and most of all, they learn to do so with confidence. A number of topics or ‘motions’ are covered every year. From ‘Aliens are Real’ to ‘Feminism has been a Success’, the students really enjoy picking are researching topics before presenting their debates to an audience.

This year has been particularly exciting for the Debate Club. Not only have they taken part in a number of in school debates, they have also researched and delivered speeches on the use of plastics in our school. They even presented to the staff at the staff meeting, as pictured below, and will soon be speaking at assemblies. Well done to all members of the Debate Team on their hard work, commitment and dedication!

Our School Community

Ms Smyth’s 4th class in collaboration with Ms Thorp’s 1st class created our school community notice board which is located just outside the principal’s office. We had great fun creating our funny staff portraits especially Ms Smyth’s…!!! We are very proud of all our hard work and we hope you like them too.

Cracking the Code in 5th class!

We were very lucky to have coders come in from Microsoft to teach us about coding. We really enjoyed working together to solve the problems and get to the end of the adventure! Well done to Jack and Evan who were the first to finish the coding adventure!

Healthy Ireland Workshops with 4th class

Aisling worked with both our 4th classes today to share some interesting ideas and tastes of healthy food.

Taste is 90% based on smell- these two 4th class pupils helped Aisling experiment to see if they could tell the difference between the taste of an apple and an onion while they kept their eyes shut and held their nose to avoid smelling the food.

Results: The two pupils confirmed it took them a few seconds to figure out if the food they were tasting was the Apple or the onion.

Maths for Fun

The children in Junior Infants have had a brilliant few weeks playing our Maths for Fun games in their classrooms with our Parent Volunteers.

A huge thanks to our volunteers who helped make this possible!
